Today should be labeled our Red Letter Day. After starting the day with a Canadian Breakfast that was too much for me to finish, things keep getting better. Better in the wildlife observation meaning.
First the breakfast. We looked to get a not to late start and so we went to the nook that serves as the restaurant. We ordered the breakfast and it came hard. At least two eggs but I think 3 to 4. 3 large slices of bacon and hash browns that were seasoned very nicely. That was plenty as it overfilled the plate, but then came out the toast. Two slices that weighed like 3 lbs. They were solid. I could only eat one slice. Chiara had the same but a different bacon. The plates were empty, except for my bread.
OK, now for the good stuff.
The day started out kinda nasty. It was raining and a fog was hanging around but was not on the ground. It was miserable, if you get my drift. We got on the ALCAN and headed north west. We went for awhile and started to climb. We kept climbing and reached the Summit. That is correct, The Summit. That is what they call it, It is the highest point on the ALCAN. I did not realize we would reach it so quickly, Once we got there it started to snow. These snow was not overpowering but did make me worry, It snowed for about 10 minutes, Then it just kept raining and made me slow down, just to be on the safe side. During all this time. which was about 45 minutes, we saw nothing and there were not cars going our way.
We finally got to more level land and things started to happen. First we saw a group of 3 Elks. Then we surprised a moose. Then we saw two bears, about 100 yards apart on the right side of the road. Then another moose, some additional Elk (3 more) a single bear on the left side and a third moose. We got some pictures but the moose are especially shy and walked into the brush when the RV came up to their location. As for the bears, one walked away while the other did not seem to care who we were. The Elk were also a bit skittish so we had to take pictures quickly. We have a lot but some are in my camera and some are in Chiara's phone. Still need to figure that point out. Oh, there was one more sighting. there were to mountain sheep, those with the circular horns at the side of the road. Chiara got some pics, but again, on the phone. Still, it was certainly the best for wildlife viewing.
The rest of the drive was rather uneventful as there were no more animals to see. We drove along and reached Watson Lake. A little hamlet in the Yukon. It is at mile post 635 on the ALCAN wih a population of about 1500.. They have a visitor center that we stopped at and watched a movie on the making of the ALCAN. One of the lady's provided some info on the Yukon. There are about 33K people living in the Yukon, and 23,000 live in Whitehorse, our destination for tomorrow. It is a large area with minimal residents. I have noticed that there are these stops along the road that are just a couple of buildings, with maybe a restaurant, a campground and possibly a gas station. People are very self sufficient here, I guess. They are spread out for miles and you wonder how many cars go by and of that number, how many actually stop. We are at one right now, as we are staying in the RV park. I am writing this in the restaurant as that is the only spot for WiFi. Been here since about 5:15. I notice that there is a small group, and they all know each other. Some work here and some just came in. It is a different life than one I am used to. The network is up and then down so this blog is also going to the late. I need better access to put in the pictures. Tomorrow, I think we will stay in Whitehorse and get a good WiFi RV campsite. We are on schedule and no reason to get in some extra miles while ending up at a site with no internet. Plus, I think we will look to walk around the town and see what there is to see. See you later!
